is in san jose this morning. people voted for this. >> reporter: people voted for this in november. what's happening today is minimum wage workers in san jose will now make $10 an hour. that's up from $8 an hour. this is the largest minimum wage pay increase in the nation. now, again, voters approved measure d in the fall. that's why the $2 increase is happening. this is of course happy news for the thousands of minimum wage workers in the city. but san jose's mayor is concerned that some businesses might not be able to handle the hike. he is worried people could lose their jobs. >> as the minimum wage goes up, small businesses in particular will make accommodations. some will absorb the cost, some will pass it on to their customers and some will have to decrease jobs and lay people off. >> a campaign is also kicking off today to encourage people to spend their extra money from those earnings in the city. the slogan is, earn and spend in san jose. it will be displayed in business windows. the minimum wage in california is $8 an hour. in san j

. this is the third time bay area police have had to open fire on suspects this week alone. an incident in san jose and a separate one in san francisco both involved car chases and ended up with police fatally shooting the suspects. reporting live in hayward, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> thanks, kira. we will have more on that on our newscast tonight. >>> san jose police continue to search a stretch of highway 85 for evidence tossed out of a speeding car by a man trying to get away from officers. it happened at blossom and calaro avenues. he intentionally rammed several patrol car. abc news reporter sergio shows us dramatic video shot by witnesses. at a homeless encampment near san jose's mineta international airport will soon be on the move. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live in san jose with more details on the city's effort to clear out that homeless camp. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. the city has already warned the people who live on this large swath of land on spring street between heading and taylor given them warning that they had to leave. today they're going to carry out that warning around 9:00 the city's point man on homeless encampments says they'll come out here and force these people to leave. it's not like san jose doesn't have homeless encampments. there are roughly 50 to 60 in the city limits. what makes this one unusual is that it is in the wide open. it's not near a waterway. it's not cover by brush. it's very visible to people. you have roughly 100 people and maybe 70 camps just spread out through acres and acres of land here out in the wide open. it's unsightly. it's of course unsanitary and there's concerns about crime though san jose police department does tell the

in san jose to accommodate a larger crowd. a motorcade from santa cruz will precede the memorial. our live coverage begins here at 11 a.m. >> a suspected carjacker who was shot by san francisco police last night is expected to survive. the shooting happened after a chase through the bayview district. the driver of a stolen bmw was cornered. police say he backed into an officer trying to arrest him. >> the officer was knocked to the ground. the bmw re-positioned itself and about to go forward and the officer was vulnerable and could have been seriously injured or killed. two brother officers fired at the bmw striking the driver one time. >> he says that the bmw was stolen the day before and the carjacker had a shotgun. police are looking into whether the same suspect may have been involved with a series of recent armed robberies. >> this is the latest in a string of officer-involved shootings. there have been six the past week, two in san francisco including last night, and one in guerneville, hayward, union city, and san jose. >> we have an update on the faith hayward shooting. police

police say san jose police officers were on a special task force in plain clothes driving unmarked cars and working a separate case when they spotted the two-door honda which was stolen. the sheriff deputies say the driver of the honda threw it in reverse, he aimed to an officer. the officer hit the driver in the head with one spot. witnesses wondered if the suspect knew they were undercover police. (inaudible). >> we didn't hearing anything like "put your hands up," just two quick shots, pop, pop. >> the suspect knew because they did put their lights and siren on attempting to stop the vehicle before he tried to ram the two police vehicles and subsequently tried to run over an officer. >> the identity of the dead driver has not been released. there was also a male passenger with him and that person is considered a witness and is cooperating with san jose police this morning. still an active scene as police collect evidence. the case is still unfolding. >> we have developing news from san jose this morning where authorities are looking for an elderly man who went missing yesterday

fast food restaurant at the shopping center. a san jose police officer that happened to be on a traffic stop a block away heard the crash and was the first responder out on the scene. the paramedics came out and declared the driver dead on the scene. police think they know who he is but are not releasing his name until they are able to notify the family. they think he is in his late 20s, early 30s. no obvious signs of drinking and driving but they won't be able to rule that out for sure until toxicology tests, not something the coroner would be performing. in the foregrounds, a white van pulling up. we believe that coroner is coming on the scene which means that maybe the scene will be cleared up sooner than initially thought. the eta was around 7:00. with the coroner coming on the skeep, it is quite possible it could be sooner. for more on your morning commute, i'm going to send it over to traffic anchor, mike inouye. mike? >>> as you saw, bob talked about the coroner potentially arriving on scene. that white van we just saw. that may be the issue. let's look at some
